Jenita Mehmeti, the child in the white shirt, died in July, 2004 of lead poisoning in the UN IDP camp in Zitkovac, Kosovo.  (Photographer unknown.)

There have been several other deaths, but only Jenita's had the official verification of a lead poisoning cause.

At the time of this update, the people are still living in the toxic conditions that led to Jenita's death, despite a medical emergency having been declared and urgent appeals from the World Health Organization, Amnesty International, Refugees International and other organizations.

Update: On July 18th, 2005, a mother and her newborn child from the lead-poisoned Zitkovac camp both died.   The deaths were not officially classified as caused by the toxic waste in the camp.
